What We Do

Shedding light on Africa's energy problem

Over 700 million people worldwide still lack access to affordable, reliable, and clean electricity. Sub-Saharan Africa accounts for nearly 70% of this deficit, with 548 million people affected. In Sierra Leone, only 29% of people have electricity, dropping to under 5% in rural areas. Many rely on toxic, costly kerosene lamps. Access to clean energy is key to breaking the cycle of poverty.

Solution: Igniting Potential Through Solar

Smiling Through Light is committed to expanding clean energy access in Sierra Leone. We partner with local women to distribute and sell reliable, sustainable solar products, reaching even the most remote communities. By supporting female entrepreneurs and building strong last-mile distribution networks, we provide safe, affordable light while creating meaningful jobs and income opportunities. All profits are reinvested into our social enterprise model: purchasing more solar products, offering training, and providing ongoing support to help women grow their businesses and uplift their communities.

Impact: Brightening lives

Smiling Through Light is dedicated to transforming the lives of women and girls, starting in Sierra Leone and expanding across Africa. Our mission combines two key goals: building thriving businesses and ensuring access to clean, sustainable energy. By doing so, we promote economic growth, raise environmental awareness, and reduce air pollution. We believe access to sustainable energy is essential for a cleaner, brighter future, and we’re committed to making sure the sustainable energy revolution leaves no one behind.
